To Market, To Market…

Every year in April and October the small town of High Point, North Carolina comes alive to host the High Point Market.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with High Point Market, “Market” (as insiders refer to it) is the largest trade show for home furnishings in the world.  There are over 2,000 exhibitors showcasing product across all categories – from sofas and dining room tables to art and bedding.  I like to compare High Point to the mystical city of Brigadoon, located in the Scottish Highlands, that comes to life for one day every 100 years!

Model55 Attends Market

This year, Model55’s Emily Dennison, GM & VP of Interior Design; Caroline Ostreicher, Manager of Interior Design; and Kayli Olinde, Assistant Buyer, all went to Market and pounded the pavement to source the latest and greatest products for our team to incorporate in their designs.  Designs that create the ultimate first impression of home for your potential residents!

I caught up with the ladies upon their return from Market to ask them about the trends they saw.  Here is what they shared:

What is the big color trend for Fall 2019?

Kayli Olinde (KO): Leopard print has made its way into the home fashion industry showing up across all categories – bedding, upholstery and even table coverings. This is a trend that supports the idea that design is inspired by the runway.  On every corner there was someone dressed in a leopard print shirt with jeans and a black leather/suede biker jacket – there is definitely a link!

Emily Dennison (ED):  We are still seeing a lot of green – especially in the rich shade of emerald in velvet on sofas and accent chairs.

Caroline Ostreicher (CO): I noticed a strong trend in black accents.  Black is a great “grounding” contrast color that acts as a neutral. I feel like it can work in any design concept and can be used in many different applications including trim on upholstery, art, decorative pillows and tabletop decorative accessories and more.

What are the latest trends in case goods and occasional pieces?

KO: Wood tones vary in finish with grey wash is still a hit. I did spy a bit of pickled oak – I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes a return in more of a modern setting.

ED:  The biggest trend I noticed was more apartment scaled options – as our focus is in designing model apartments for multifamily and senior living this is perfect for us!

CO: Nesting tables of all shapes, sizes and material!  These pieces are so versatile – especially when designing for apartments.

What are the trends in upholstery?

KO: Lots of neutrals with textured pillows in a tonal palette.  Linen is still a very predominant fabric in upholstery!

ED:  Velvet in jewel-toned hues as well as softer tones, such as Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year – Rose Quartz and Serenity – continues to be a strong choice for fabric.

CO: Lots of velvet and velour in rich colors and animal prints.

What is your least favorite trend that you saw at Market?

KO: I don’t have one – I think there is a right place for all styles!

CO:  I can’t think of one?!

What is your favorite find at Market?

KO: My favorite find at Market is always lighting – gorgeous, sparkling chandeliers twinkling above 🙂

CO:  Fun and creative wall décor like shelving and abstract wall décor other than art or mirrors.
