5 DIY Projects to Help You Create a Home You’ll Love
Here at Model55, we understand how busy life can get. Sometimes we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we forget the put the necessary time and effort into what we actually love. Between work and other obligations, it gets hard to sit down and focus on what really matters… Wait – If you’re thinking this is starting to sound like a sappy relationship column, don’t worry; it’s not – at least, not in the traditional sense. We’re talking about a love for interior design and decorating, and the relationship an individual has with his or her home. Think about how much time you spend in your home, and all that it has to offer. Now, ask yourself, “Does my home really express who I am?” Regardless of whether you’re classic, shabby-chic, rustic, elegant, or any other adjective you can think of, you can probably do more to ensure that your home is representative of the kind of space you want to be a part of at the end of every day.
So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we thought it would be fun to put together a list of our 5 favorite DIY decorating projects that are bound to breathe new life into your home. Enjoy!

If you like the look of crisp, clean art, but don’t feel like spending a fortune, try this simple idea that we love: Buy 5 to 7 picture frames (different sizes), and frame your favorite patterns. You can use wrapping paper or wallpaper, whatever you prefer. Hang your frames as a gallery wall for a quick, clean, and expensive look in any room. We recommend using the cardboard backing from your frame to plan and mark your wall before you begin hanging. If you’re not sure where to find frames that won’t break the bank, we recommend HomeGoods or Michael’s.
#2. Create a Wood Pallet Accent Wall in The Bedroom or Living Room

This contemporary design style is really in right now, and we can see why! As far as we are concerned, we love the look with reclaimed wood, and think it adds an element of warmth and rustic home-i-ness to any room. There are tons of DIY blogs out there with tips on how to create a wood pallet accent wall on a budget, we recommend checking out doityourself.com for great tips. We also love the simple and easy-to-use product offered by stikwood.com. At $10 a square foot, all you have to do is peel the back and stick it on to your wall!

If you think you would like to add a touch of elegance to your kitchen, try removing one of your cabinet’s doors, and designating the open shelving for your nicest crystal and glassware. We love this project because it’s easy and it can completely change the look of your kitchen. For added pop, you can upholster the cabinets with patterned contact paper (found at any Target or Michael’s). If you are feeling adventurous, you can use the patterned contact paper on the back of the cabinet walls to draw extra attention to the area.
#4. Make Your Own Quoted Throw Pillows
If you ask any interior designer how he or she feels about throw pillows, 9 out of 10 times the answer will be along the lines of how important they are. Throw pillows are essential for tying the look and feel of living and sitting rooms together. If you have old, outdated throw pillows – don’t throw them away! With some plain fabric, your choice of stencils, and a black sharpie, you can create throw pillows with your favorite quotes on them! And hey, you like the way they turn out you can create more to use as personalized gift ideas for your friends and family.
